It's quite possible that the sound you're hearing is the piston hitting the head. When the rod bearing goes, the piston has a longer stroke. Therefore, the sound you hear is higher up in the engine than a rod bearing. I certainly wouldn't drive it. If that's what it is, you could ruin your head as well. I hope I'm wrong, since I have the same issue.
