You don't really need to compound them unless you're going for higher boost levels. I don't know what the stock boost levels are for the 617 but the Eaton M90 I have alone would probably do the trick.
There are versions on Buicks, Pontiacs and Fords. The one I have is the least specialized in design and it came from a T-bird. I got my M90 off ebay for a little over $100. You can also find the larger Eaton M112 from a Ford Lightning truck and underdrive it. The real expense is in the fabrication of the intake tubing - lots of TIG welding.
