Your right to the extent I hate to work on any other car now, The 240Ds have my spoiled 
On that 'plate swap" I took the side plate off the broken tranny, nothing to lose, OK , that was easy so I took the side plate off the replacement tranny and both looked the same inside so I swapped them, that was on a friends car a couple years ago.
