Yeah the 400E can be a nice car...once you educate yourself about all the "issues". ASR is a potential nightmare though.
Having said that, as a used car purchase, it does have the potential for providing alot of pleasure.
Make SURE the maintainence has been done, especially on the tranny. Regular, documented, fluid changes will double it's live.
Although the chain may not be a known problem the chain guides are and if you need to replace all of them it is pricey.
The other thing to consider is the W124 quality dropped off after 1993 with body rust much more common in 1994 and 1995.
So, try and get a 1992 or 1993 W124, regardless of the engine.
If anyone needs a good used wiring harness for the 92/93 400E I have one to sell. $400. It is a replacement that was in the car 4 years.
