I can't imagine the utility of leaving the axles in. You should be replacing the dif seals, Changing dif oil, cleaning and repacking the cv joints etc...not impossible to do under the car but messy, difficult .... I ve swapped out 4 axles so far and it's a 4-6 hour job max.
