The metal key will open the trunk, and the drivers door. If you use a charger thru the lighter you do need the ignition ON. I would get a small one with clips, some of the marine stores have a charger that can have leads hooked to the battery a plug to seperate the leads attached to the battery, in addition to the clips. The MB version is almost identical.
