What year is it Richard? Doesn't ring a bell, except the air intake grilles on the top of the hood on a new 2003 SL.
On a R129 (1990-2001 SL) it has a dust filter, it's dead in the center on top of the firewall, has 2 phillips screws holding it in place. I can't think of anything in recent years that sounds like what you are describing, not on a R107 or R129, but maybe you have the new one.
