Miles on pre 1981 cars, not always believable

Without good records, I wouldn't believe the miles on a car that old. But people do on Ebay, all the time.

The pictures aren't good enough to verify details. There are some sellers who take advantage of the facts that:

You can't verify the history by VIN# on older cars.

Old Mercedes odometers fail.

Their odometers are also easy to turn back.

Caveat emptor.

Now, 2 years ago, or so there was a beautiful w114 for sale in the bay area that really did look showroom perfect. It was baby blue. Gasoline 4 cylinder. Anyone remember that one? I wanted it so badly, that I trembled. My fingers kept reaching towards the keyboard to place a bid. I already had 5 cars, and couldn't afford it.
