Question Advice on 89 300SE stereo upgrade needed!

I want to upgrade the stereo in my wifes 89 300 se for her birthday. I'm sure the stock amps are gone because the subs in the front doors don't work anymore and only one speaker in the rear and front work. I've looked at them and they all look good. This car apparently has a 6 speaker system, 2 in in dash, 2 subs in front door, 2 rear deck and has those two amps behind rear seat.

I went to a local car stereo shop and they want to put in a high power Pioneer Premier head unit (the car has a fm Premier CD changer in the trunk) and try to leave the stock speakers. They will rewire directly to the speakers and run a wire from the front speakers in parallel to the door subs. He said this is a trick to make the subs get more of the power?

Price with installation is between $250 & $300. What am I going to get for that? I don't mind spending a little more, say up to $600.

Any suggestions if I want to do it myself? The real puzzling question is what to do about the lower front door subs?

Thanks again,

Ken
