I also enjoy how a good series flush's out the characters slowly, and like in the real world its sometimes very hard to see who is the "bad" or "good" guys. Characters switch sides, and their are many shades of gray.

Yeah character revealing is fantastic. Here your basically dealing with stereotypes that don't get broken throughout and entire show...even if its 5 seasons long. People go through trauma and change, its fundamental and is rarely reflected on US tv (Battlestar Galactica was the exception to that rule)
Also most US TV is just so damn predictable. Good guys win, then end. Cliffhanger, the good guys get away, then end. Its different to see the bad guys win from time to time or at least see the goods guys win pyrrhic victories.
