X3 . . . that's exactly the problem I had with my '87 300D. The odometer would work fine for awhile and then simply stop turning. Speedo was fine. After awhile the odometer would start working again. Confirmed the error with a GPS, about 20% low miles recorded. Pulled the speedo, had the odometer rebuilt and no problems since.
