I think for me the main reason is keeping the nasty crud out of the intake. The other "reasons" would be getting rid of all of that vacuum spaghetti (more chances for a leak) and getting those ugly EGR valve and hard line off of the intake and exhaust manifolds.

On the 85 it really cleans up the drivers inner fender and simplifies a slightly more complicated vacuum system.
