Sorry to hear about your misfortune. The problem may have been due to your tranny having bushings, the newer models use needle bearings:

I have a 98 E320 with 165K miles on the original trans but I am on my third trans fluid/filter change.

I wouldn't hold my breath on any compensation from MB or any other car manufacture on a 10 year old car with over 100K miles.
