I thought it was only the cast heads that cracked?
I always checked heads by magnetizing them and spraying powder on them. Otherwise the cracks aren't visible. You can't magnetize an aluminum head.
I would suggest you probably have a bad gasket.

I had the same problem not too long ago on a Ford. Didn't blow white smoke but the coolant level dropped while the engine was running. Didn't take long to figure out exhaust was leaking into the coolant system.
A new head fixed it right up.
