Fader control as a switch - can I do this?

My 93 190 does not have an antenna switch. Since I rarely use the radio, I don't want to waste the limited life of the antenna when I don't need it. My plan is to use the fader as a antenna switch. With the multimeter I found two contacts that only have continuity when the fader is in the middle position and none when in the far upper (front of car) position. Since I've already bypassed the fader and don't need it and I don't want after market switches on my console - I though this would be a neat way of doing this. I'm concerned that the fader can handle the constant 12 volts. Does anyone know if this will work or have you tried it? I could put another flasher switch in it's place but would rather everything look normal. Thanks, Andy
