Prokudin-Gorsky's own research yielded patents for producing colour film slides and for projecting colour motion pictures. His process used a camera that took a series of three monochrome pictures in sequence, each through a different-coloured filter. The early part of the 20th century was one of the best eras for photography. Prokudin-Gorsky captured state of the art in engineering feats made by a population of humble people seeming from another era, most of whom worked in fields.
Over a hundred years later and the major changes are kinds of fields in which the majority work, and, of course, how images are made.
