I like the route you took. I can't tell if it's the sender or the receiver that's at fault here. The opener works fine with the wall switch so that's not the problem.

Also she has only one remote (a problem right there, even when it's working) so if this one is not working, I'll have no way to communicate the existing signal to the new device.

I'm hoping that a switch is a switch and the new receiver ought to be easily wired in to operate the opener. That's about how it worked out for you, I take it.
