If you have $20k to spend... You can buy a great car for $7-10k and have $1,000 per year to maintain it. If something unexpected came up, it would not bankrupt you.

I read a lot of good things in this thread by the other contributors. If you read complete thread as a whole you have the basic information to start a search for your dream car.

The time you spend learning about the various years and models, then looking over the ads will prepare you for a live inspection and test drive. Whatever you do, don't buy a car on eBay without having a professional check it out. Cars look great in the photographs and be a nightmare in reality.
