Look in your door jamb and you'll see a metal, flat "bar" that goes from the door frame to inside the door. That's a door check. Behind the door panel is a box that is the primary part of that door check - they get worn or broken after 20+ years.
You'll need to remove the door panel, then unbolt the bad one and bolt in a new one. It's a simple job - worst part is getting the door panel off.
