Hmm, I don't recall the bearing, and unfortunately I trashed all my pix of the disassembly...just last night

Thanks Rick. After fiddling with it for about four hours it finally went in---I used the polish mark from the brake band and the brake band to verify it had gone down as far as it could.
I did some more digging and figured out the bearing thing so all is good---I hope *crosses fingers*. Tomorrow will tell
