I went and looked at the strip on my wagon and it almost looks like the end is a separate piece. There is a little flap connected to the end that runs a few mm up the main trim strip. The rubber end is even a different color.

At any rate, it's a wonder that MB didn't seal that body joint, rubber trim or not.
