Chuck - I replaced the kickdown solenoid on my '72 SL. It is a very simple job. I bought the used replacement for about $50 from
http://www.mercedesdismantlers.com/. They are very helpful.
But maybe yours is just stuck? - maybe pull it and check it on the bench. Mine showed zero resistance across the solenoid coil.
