Factory radio on 92 400E, weird phenomenon

Hello all. I want to know if anyone has ever noticed this on there 91-93 mercedes W124 radios (upgraded version with seperate amps). With the bass and treble all the way up, and your slowly increase the volume, you can hear certain spectrums (like mids and highs) decrease to compensate for the increased bass. And whenever the bass hits, the treble suffers, and makes for a very weird sounding system when turned up mid to high. The only time it sounds good is when its at low volumes.

MY question is, what causes this? Is it the puny amps? It seems like they have an active equalizer system like that of the Bose, so that is doesnt distort. Is there a way to take the amps apart and disable this, so that you can max out the speakers? I DONT WANT TO PUT AN AFTERMARKET IN IT, so please dont recommend that. If it could be done, I WOULD put aftermarket amps in. I just want to keep the factory head unit.

Any info is greaty appreciated.
