What you say about fabrication is absolutely correct, and I was just saying exactly this to a friend today. However, I have not lost hope that the easier route is to find the original parts and avoid having to fab something up. The epc diagram seems to indicate that the metal-rubber-metal is really only 2 pieces, one being a combination of rubber and metal. That's how it is on an older BMW of mine as well (I know because I considered cannibalizing it!)
