What you put in it doesn't determine it's capacity.
Your '96 has a 21.1 gallon fuel tank.....your MPG beliefs are faulty. (Way off.....)
'96 E300Ds do not get 42 MPG - nor anywhere near it.....if they did, they would go 886 miles per tank - NOT ONLY 550 miles per tank.
