We have muddy logging trails to explore (more like deep ruts), loose sandy beaches, marshes, swamps. You don't have to have mountains or snow to appreciate 4WD. I have considered buying a little Samurai or and old 4 Runner to reach some beach areas that are pretty much inaccessible in my Mercedes.

Sorry for the misunderstanding; I should have clarified what I was trying to say...which was that SUVs could hardly be justified for on-road use in inclement weather in a southern state (like TX), due to the fact that most people never take their SUVs offroad.
But if you plan to hit South Padre Island in a 4-runner, more power to you, man.
