Just went through something similar to this with the California DMV.

Got a letter sent to my AZ. address stating that due to expired registration on my car i would be charged X amount of dollars, future registrations would be denied, my children would be re-possessed, etc., etc. I got a laugh from it considering the fact the car was abandoned in AZ in 1992 and I applied for an abandoned vehicle title for it in 1994. 'course the fact they sent me the letter to an AZ address SHOULD have been a clue I didn't live in the state of California.

Had to give Ca. DMV a call and,as far as I know, it is cleared up. The officer I talked to said he is spending most of his day fielding this type of call.
