Badging is propaganda really. "Automatic" was put on to boast the Mercedes Auto box, a large feat in its day, to produce an automatic box, let alone your own. It was part of an effort to persuade drivers (mostly American) that european cars in fact do have auto boxes....

"Turbodiesel" was in effect the same way, meant to boast the first and only turbocharged passenger car diesel motor, and to prove on the open road that the power compared to the former "diesel" was not to be taken lightly, particularly from a stop light.

The V8 badge was in no doubt a throw back to the Euro market, being G wagens are indeed had with diesels, sixes and eights. If you know, Toyota, and Land Rover also have been known to use the badge, as an advert, that not only American trucks have V8s.

Remember in the nineties when GM cars had ABS on the trunklids.... LOL
