You are correct on all accounts. But it does fit.

I washed up one of several spare PNP metal OEL caps, dug out the Hard cooked black old rubber gasket that had turned to the consistency of plastic. broke in several pieces. washed the cap in a pan of gas, blew it out, and install one of my Blue Gaskets.

Opened the hood of the 240D and removed my leak free cap and install the Blue gasketed one. fits very well and nice and tight.

The old metal fuel cap and the oil cap will interchange, so what difference what gasket is under it if it works? one difference the VC gets hot and cooks the rubber gasket, the fuel cap is in a cool invironment and subjected to Diesel fuel. both a petroleum product.

The 300D has the Blue one and the 240 has a new black one. we`ll see how they hold up in the long term.
