I found the same thing you did. 1/2 was too small and 5/8 fit exactly like you say.

The crimp is about 3/4" from the center of the 1st crimp to the center of the last. I actually sacrificed one of the ferrells by crimping it around a hose with no fitting and measured the crimped ID of the rubber hose. The crimp is behind the 1st "big barb" so it won't slip off.

I think it's gonna be OK.
