One question out of curiosity (and I'm sure ignorance): How would a dirty switch account for the symptom I describe (blinking for a few minutes then staying on)? Doesn't the switch simply complete the circuit? Doesn't a failing relay more likely account for the symptom?

More than likely a relay. But in some models the relay was built into the switch, so it might be a case of 6 of one/half-dozen of another regarding the advice to clean the switch.
