w115 turn signals not working

Hey all, about six months ago the turn signals in my 1971 220D stopped working. If I remember correctly, it was a gradual thing - when the car was cold and it was cool out in the AM they would work but as the car warmed up or if it was warm outside they'd stop working. Eventually they stopped all together.

I held off on replacing the turn signal switch because a new replacement OES one was/is so friggin expensive but finally made the plunge and just got done installing it. I'm pretty sure I installed it correctly because the wipers, wiper switch and high beams work (though only when you pull it towards you to flash em, pushing it forward does nothing though I'm pretty sure it was the same with the old switch). Unfortunately I get no response from the turn signals - pushing it up or down does nothing. Pulling the hazard plug on the dash does get them to flash.

Any idea of what could be wrong? When it rains water does drip from the far left side under the dash, could that have messed up some wiring?

(fyi, I made sure to order the correct switch according to my chassis number)
