Need help removing baked on rubber seal on valve cover

This is actually off of a 2000 BMW 528iT but I suppose you could have it happen on the MB if the oil changes are not done often enough. I pulled the valve cover off and the old rubber is cooked/baked into the groove on the valve cover. The valve cover is some kinda high tech plastic looking material and I sure don't want to break it. Any thoughts on how to get the rubber out? I'm considering applying a little heat to see if it makes any difference.

Warning the pictures border on being porno because of the sludge deposits. BMW made a mistake when they had those 15k oil change intervals because they did not take into consideration that the second owner is probably not going to follow the synthetic oil only recommendation.
