If I remove all shims and snug the clutch tight to the friction plate of the pulley the compressor functions perfectly...ice cold air...soundlessly. The issue is definately the clutch not engaging and I am wondering if the clutch slippage under the hard acceleration caused enough heat to burn the fuseable link as the link I read suggested. The rpms increase when I turn the a/c on so I'm concluding the controller is sending the proper signal.
