This thread will give you am idea the difference in the lengths of an auto and manual trans. this auto is out of an 79 300CD, but Iam sure the SD is about the same length.

240D 4-speed manual swap in 300CD

Not sure which 4-spd trans you are going to use, the all aluminium one like in the picture of the old iron box. may both be the same length.

Sirnik84 did a 4-spd swap in his 84 300SD reciently, maybe contact him for the dimentions on the DL.
