Frankencar, albeit a nice one. Well on the outside.
But the asking price is an insanely optimistic fishing expedition. Frankencars, even in that condition, are worth less than the original. If he had a 450se in that shape a nostalgic German might give him top dollar for it. But any German who has that kind of money to put out for a w116 doesn't care about the fuel costs, so the diesel is a moot point.
I'm not sure if the 450se could be had with a stick on the far side of the big pond, I believe the 350se could.
I agree that the original car was probably a 280se, with the badging now changed.
