Graham,

If I understand things correctly, the K40 relay is the whole unit I pictured in post #7 and has part #A 000 540 00 72 stamped on it. I attached a file of what I think is usually referred to as the K40 relay on the 210 series. I am not an electrical engineer or trained MB technician but there appears to be some relationship to the ABS system and the complete K40 relay unit. Your EPC check agrees with what I said previously - the small relay, part #0025427219 has been replaced by #002542721964. Searching for part #0025427219 on another site shows it as being for the fuel pump. On MB dealer sites 0025427219 still shows up as a relay and 002542721964 is listed as a contactor so both part numbers seem to be valid. I'm not sure why I was told that 002542721964 superceded 0025427219 unless it was only for my AMG model. I will look under the hood this morning and see if I can remember what the last relay we changed was. I don't think it was part of the K40 relay though. Since replacing a small relay finally fixed the problem, I might have been fine keeping the K40 relay I had.
