There aren't any really large dents on the bottom of your tank are there? Hammering it to oblivion might have been a contender for the bent shaft, but maybe not based on you pre-existing symptoms.

I'd continue to watch miles driven along with the fuel gauge, if the shaft was bent it may be easier for the float to get hung up and not register accurately.
