The vehicle was originally equipped with the R4 and that compressor is economical to procure and it will do a fine job for you in Socal ambients.
The preference for R12 really does not command a reverse conversion unless the ambient temp routinely climbs to 95°F. or more.
The key to success is a thoroughly clean system that is properly evacuated and filled exactly to specification. That's not an easy task for most folks.
