On the contrary, the Cayenne will save Porsche.

Porsche is the only mainstream family-owned car company left, with the exception of BMW. Without the profitable Cayenne, it could not afford to retain that independence. And it is the company's independence that allows it to make such great cars as feature in the present range. Be in no doubt: no Cayenne, no Carrera GT.

Anyway, I'm not sure the Cayenne is such a duffer. Of course, we in the know have nothing but scorn for SUVs, but the Cayenne is much more than a mere SUV. It exceeds the on-road abilities of the X5 on the one hand, and trumps the Range Rover off-road on the other hand. In this respect Porsche has pulled off the impossible. The Cayenne, like all Porsches, is about the triumph of engineering integrity over compromise.

Besides, in the metal I think it will look great.
