Theoretically your governor will limit the RPMs and not allow the engine to over rev no matter what you do...
The RPM range you describe does not sound that severe. In 4th gear i believe it is a direct drive and you will actually "redline" or max out around... think, think, I may be way off here but I think on my 240 it is like 4250 or something like that.

Im certain that someone more knowledgable than me in this area will confirm these numbers.
