There is at least one other thread here on this guy. I have seen the documentary and read some other material elsewhere and you have to bear in mind he has a niche market so narrow only a virtual one-man operation could make a living off serving it, even at those prices.
I cannot even imagine how much time he puts into these cars, and he claims he travels in person to get them and drive them back to his shop (tho I wonder if that was the case with the 240d, with that low mileage). If you bear in mind that his level of detail and prep is equal to high-end restorers, then his prices start to look pretty reasonable relative to what your'e getting. Also if memory serves he provides a warranty on the cars.
If I had the money I would buy one of his cars, perhaps not those but I have seen others that are equally pristine but with more 'normal' odometer readings, say in the 80-100k range, that are priced in the teens.
Or yes you could spend your life on Craigs and eBay classifieds and hope to score one of the cars he finds, some day, somewhere, for his source price. But only the most committed (or commit-able) of us would then put the time into going through the car from end to end to bring it to his standard.
