Good advice. Also, installing the new spare parts before you leave gives you an opportunity to learn how to do the repair while you've got all of your tools and are safe at home. Lying on your back in a ditch somewhere is not the time to discover a missing wrench. The more difficult the repair, the better to do it before you leave.
Consider snow tires (or similar) for their traction in rough terrain. This is a good time of year for them as everyone is bringing out their new production for the coming (north of the equator) winter. I just bought a set of Bridgestone Blizzaks for visits to snow country this winter. Date coded 2512, they are less than 2 months old.
