Most likely they put one of those stickers in the corner of the windshield saying "oil change due at XXXXX miles" and the grade of oil used, or it was listed on the receipt.

I even had a MB dealer overfill my first 87 300D by about 2 quarts - actually not overfill, as I'd brought along the requisite number of quarts of my own oil - somehow they missed about 2 quarts of old oil in the engine, and just dumped the new oil in on top of it - luckily I checked everything over before even leaving their parking lot - I had the service manager himself check the dipstick, which he did 3 times in disbelief, then took the keys from me and immediately pulled it back into the service area and started to raise cane.
