I drove tiptronic Passat. You can keep the shifter to one side and essentially its automatic. In the middle of the shift range you should have a slot that allows you to move shifter completely to one side (probably right). Now you have 2 options move shifter up (forward) or down (backwards). The shifter WILL NOT stay in the new position, because now it acts as a manual. I believe the forward is a downshift, and backward is upshift. if you forget to downshift while slowing down the car will stay in the selected gear untill you drive at about 15 mph. at this point tranni will automatically shift to first. if you stop it will shift to neutral. However, it will not upshift during acceleration, so you will be stuck in first untill you upshift.
