I have a 3/4 inch socket set, however the socket was too high to clear the half shaft. Also, the closest socket I had was 1 3/4".
I enlarged the socket to 1.8125" and then had to grind down an old 1/2" socket to use as a 1/2" to 3/4" adapter, that fits almost flush into the 3/4" socket.
I could ask why the designer would locate the strainer under the half shaft instead of the return location which is unobstructed.
I did get the strainer out and it is very dirty.
