2002 E320 has a different engine entirely. It's a V6 and has no head gasket problems.

My E430 is one of the most trouble free cars I've ever owned.

I think 2000-2002 E320 and E430's are among the most sorted and reliable cars MB ever made.

There is only a 1-2 mpg penalty in the E430 vs. the E320, so don't rule out the V8.
