Can anyone confirm that this is indeed a Garrett T3 in my pic? And for those that may have ventured where few have trod, can the standard bearing kit rebuild be done on the car w/o removing the whole turbo? (I've sprayed the bolts here)
Also, assuming this is a T3, are the repair kits vehicle-specific? I have an '85 300TD.
Thank you!

Garrett and Air Research are the same company. On the back of the Compressor Housing (the side that faces the cast iron Bearing Housing)there is Tag. It will have the Mercedes Part Number and I believe the Model Number like T-3 or T03 on the Tag and the Maker.
You will likely need to get a Mirror and Flashlight to find it.
As far as I know all of the Garrett Turbos for the 300D 617.95* Engines have the same innards in the Turbo.
However, if the Turbocharger has ever been rebuilt or exchanged it is possible for it to have oversized Bearing on the OD and undersized ID Bearings for the Shaft Journals.
If the Noise is really coming from the Turbocharger that means something is making Metal to Metal contact. That means either the Compressor Wheel Fins are rubbing the Housing (most likely) or the Turbine Wheel is rubbing the Housing.
You might consider taking the Turbo apart to see before ordering any parts.
