I can't speak for other states, but resident tuition alone at AZ's three state Unis is 10K a year. Add books, lab fees, parking fees, all the other nickel and dime crap and living expenses whether in a dorm or off campus and you're looking at double that. What 19 year old possesses the skills to get a job that will pay him that kind of money?
When I first enrolled at ASU, tuition was 360 bucks a semester. Two weeks' tips waiting tables and I'd paid the semester's tuition. Another week and I had my books paid for. It's not quite that simple any more.
