question about insurance

I have lots of boat insurance. Four policies total. 3 with canoes and rafts. One for sailboats. I'm heading off for a trip in a sailboat so last night I decided to make sure everything is right with the insurance. Log on to our account on the insurance companies website. No sailboat insurance policy shows up. Contact the insurance agent this morning. Had two interactions on the policy last summer. Added a sailboat in May and deleted a sailboat in June since I sold the boat. We'd gotten a bill for the remainder of the year for the added sailboat but nothing on that policy since. Agent contacts the central office to find out what happened. He says they terminated the policy. Doesn't know why. We never got a termination notice nor did we get a bill for the past year which we should have paid last August. We didn't catch it because we had four policies and just paid the bills we got.
Now the insurance company is saying in order to reinstate the policy we have to pay last year's bill. This seems goofy to me. They terminated the policy without our consent. We never canceled. Seems to me they should eat the premium for last year. I'm pretty sure I know what would have happened in the past year if I'd made a claim on the policy. Anyone run across this kind of thing before?
